Which Video Do You Like Better?

I just filmed these two videos recently.  Neither of them are perfect and I will probably shoot a third video eventually.  However, I’m going to use one of these in the meantime, and put it on my home page at www.ryaneliason.com

I discovered that it’s not easy to make a good video.  You’re talking to an inanimate object (a camera), trying to remember all the points you want to cover, and still wanting to come across naturally.  You want your personality to show through, and you want to communicate your message clearly.

I would really appreciate any feedback you feel like providing.  Which one do you think I should use on my web page, and why?

Personally, I like #2 better because I’m more relaxed and I think my personality comes out more and I seem more confident.  The problem with #2 is that it’s quite silly in the beginning, and people who don’t already know me (and therefore don’t know that I also have a serious, focused, intense side) may get turned off.   I don’t mind if a few fuddy-duddies get turned off, but if my ideal potential clients get a bad first impression…well, that’s not good is it.

In any case, I’d love to hear your first impression.  Especially if you are someone who doesn’t already know me and has never met me before.  Feedback from people who know me is certainly appreciated as well.

You can leave your feedback by making a comment on this blog post.

Thanks in advance!

    hi ryan,

just checked out the videos….#1 actually feels clearer and actually a bit more accessible to me, especially in the beginning part. one thing i noticed in both videos, tho #2 is worse in this aspect, is your interjections of “um” and “uh”– and i noticed them simply cuz i speak that way too, especially when leaving phone messages (so i’ve been reviewing messages i leave if possible, and working on clarifying my wording..) anyhoo congrats on getting this on the web!

    aloha,

    Ryan,

I agree with Laura that video #1 is clearer and it seems to get your point across more effectively. I like #2 but the goofing around in the beginning seemed to have thrown your thoughts off a bit although it’s still a good video.

    Hi Ryan,

Actually, I really like the second video better, because it is more relaxed and more how I know you. You are both light-hearted and serious. I don’t think it seems too goofy. They are both quite clear, but the second one is more personal, in my opinion. I did notice that you string things together with “and” or “and um” a lot, which is a very common public speaking habit and hard to break. Toastmasters would be great for ANYONE doing public speaking or making videos, which is similar and maybe more difficult. Have you done Toastmasters??

I like both for different reasons. I like the personal feel of video 2. However, you are definitely more focused continuously in video 1. I lost interest part way thru video 1, but not video 2~ you kept my intention because I started out laughing! (I like how you giggle after saying we want money and then check to see if the camera is running… a little comic relief for the heavy subject!)

My suggestion is to edit the videos… it’s a style I’ve seen before. clip out anything useless and extraneous (but keep a few of the funny parts), and this will keep it short and interesting. Leaving 2 the way it is might seem unprofessional in the beginning and may lose you a point of credibility. But I think that both humor, lightheartedness, and sincerity can come forth if you edit the two together (or just edit the second one) and splice the best parts in. I think it would be a good break to have the clip ‘jump’ in time regularly. I’ve seen it before in professional photography training videos. It’s effective. Sort of an MTV style.

PS.. Great motivator to get us to watch your videos and learn more about what you do! Gimmick or not, it got me to watch both videos! lol
